In the graceful light of our Creator, I congratulate you all to be united for the 45^th year of this institution. May our collective humility fall under His merciful watch.

As we ride the waves of time, we must segment our lives into small, manageable periods of self-evaluations, education, and application. Let us reaffirm those same values that brought us blessings and successes through ever-shifting tides.

As a business establishment, we must always value business goals over operational excellence. Excellence is surely the fuel to the engine of success, but goals drive the vehicle. As a unit, we never compromise our brand value, operational excellence, and commitment for our actions, just as we never compromise regulatory compliances for our goals. Only a balanced approach without tunnel vision can stand the test of time. We must never be so tunneled and caught up in the comfort zone of our designated role that we fail to seek challenges. It is the brilliance of our imperfections when we tackle new challenges that light our path ahead. To err is human, and the acknowledgment of the mistakes we make along that path only make those challenges easier to bear. Acknowledging our weaknesses and striving to mitigate it is where strength lies. 

Business goals may change with time, but values remain. Our establishment has never been stagnant in its stride, and we must always sustain its adaptive capacity. Our esteemed superiors and their diligent subordinates must not only participate in harmonious coexistence but also a symbiotic relationship of trust, integrity, and dependency. Regardless of how little or big the contribution may be, each participant must take full ownership of their position. Allah SWT has graced our establishment so that we remain free of stress from financial constraints and bureaucratic setbacks. This sets us up perfectly in the position to be devising bold, new strategies for seizing new opportunities. By the grace of Almighty we have survived COVID-19, and with His mercy we shall continue to rise above many such trials as long as we manage to adapt and stay ahead of the curve. We should try to be a family and help each other at times of need. United we stay strong, happy, and peaceful. Focusing on the quality of life, not only for ourselves or our stakeholders, but for the country as a whole. 

May we find strength in our conviction, purpose in our step, and self-actualization in our perspectives. May the United family remain a united family.

All praises to Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wa ta’aala for granting us yet another prosperous year at United.

We are grateful to Almighty Allah and all of you for helping us navigate through a series of challenging years and consistently achieving success through upholding our commitments to our stakeholders and perseverance to excel and thrive.

This year, despite the global crisis, our nation has reached a grand milestone with the completion of the Padma Bridge. I want us all to take this moment to appreciate how far we have come and how we continue to be blessed with many new business opportunities.

Dear Well-wishers and Members of the United Family.

On this auspicious day, I would begin with offering my heartfelt gratitude to Allah SWT for His continuous blessings. It is by His mercy that in our 44 years of journey, there has never been one single day on which we felt that we were not moving forward. We have had difficult times, but our blessings have been beyond our expectations, and we have overcome difficulties. 

I thank the Founding Members of the Board, with utmost reverence, for they have built an institution that has survived stalwartly throughout its 44 years of operations. Their unique abilities to become pioneers in key development sectors of the country has set new benchmarks and have benefitted the citizens of this nation, improved socio-economic conditions and have contributed to the GDP growth of our Country. 

I thank the Founding Members of the Board for their timely roll-out of the succession plan and transition to second generation. I also take this opportunity to recognize and appreciate the invaluable contributions of the Founding Members to the underprivileged faction of the society through United Trust. It is a shining example of structured social services in this country. On behalf of the second generation, I promise to remain committed to the vision of the Founding Members in fulfilling our social obligations. 

As we embark on this journey, in retrospect, our company has managed well to maneuver the crisis resulting for the pandemic. We are continuing strong by the infinite blessings of the Almighty and I am happy to report that the vast majority of our workforce afflicted by the virus have recovered. 

This day marks the beginning of another year during which we renew our pledge to further strengthen the position of our Group. We vow to remain committed to the vision of the Founding Members of the Board, where we will continue to honor our commitments and contribute to the betterment of our society as a whole. We wish to remain in the position of a key contributor driving further development in Bangladesh and we will continue investing in our nation. Fulfilling this vision will demand innovation, dedication, adaptation, discipline, best in class service, but above all, an increased ownership of responsibility by each of our colleagues. I urge all my colleagues to start tackling responsibilities with the mindset of completing with dedication and sincerity. I hope that we may all share in each other’s success through our own dedication, trust and commitment. Over the last few years, our company has contended with challenging moments. Thankfully, for all the hardships, United Group has prevailed through hard work and strong commitments. We continue to adopt innovative ways of attaining our vision of a world class business house for the advancement of not only our nation but all citizens who are directly or indirectly impacted by our operations. 

As a company, we must continue the progression of improvement and meaningful change. I, therefore, call on all employees to support the corporate leadership so that we may all reap the benefits of a more responsive, resourceful and effective system for creating value for our customers and beneficiaries. 

My fellow colleagues, you must build confidence, take ownership and bring growth and sustainability to the business. United Group, a multi-disciplinary business house, has proven itself to be a dynamic and progressive enterprise, positioning itself as one of the leading business houses of the country. We are now working to achieve being the best brand committed to excellence in all our endeavors – our long-term management vision. This calls for us to create a robust platform capable of delivering consistent growth under any condition.

By the Grace of Almighty, we are certainly privileged to have received the strongest of platforms as gifts from our founding directors. They have presented us with a healthy financial base, strong asset backing, a company without debt and liabilities, a timely and forward-thinking succession planning and lastly, an undeniable reputation in the market.

We have been concentrating on implementing succession planning and restructuring the business units for the last 4-5 years. Alongside asset and capital, development of human resource are crucial to achieve the vision that we have set for the company. In fact, we believe that our effective human resource is the next big ingredient to drive us to tomorrow. The Group presently employs around 7,800 individuals where female representation stands at around 20% and more than 50% of our employees are professionals. Our structure is such that the top line executives are experienced professionals fostering youth leadership as the middle and bottom lines are the young leaders of tomorrow. The average age of our employee stands at around 35 years where most of these young professionals have been working with us for around 7-8 years already! We have set a target of creating 15,000 value added employment out of which we hope to achieve the 10,000 employment by the end of 2019, owing to the number of ongoing construction projects that are scheduled to come into operation by that time. In 2018 alone, we have invested about Taka 30 lacs for human resource development in the form of training both home and abroad. The management of United is working hard to give the best working environment and a healthy culture that encourages bonding and interaction among the employees, increasing their comfort level.

United has built a strong repute of thinking out of the box as we continue to present the nation with innovative solutions to cater to the socio-infrastructural needs of the country. From the first private sector power plant in the country to the first private land port, we have presented the nation with many of its first of a kind projects.

Establishing a 200 MW HFO fired power plant with complete fuel storage and handling facilities in a mere 6 months has been so far one of the boldest of our projects. The project earned the recognition of being the Best Power Producer in 2018 at the National Energy & Power Week. At present, United’s power plant is supplying 900 MW to the national grid.

We are blessed with a series of upcoming projects- Power Projects of 615 MW, IPCO, Shipping, Tank Terminal, United City in Satarkul, Unimart expansion and many more in the pipeline. With 615 MW of power generation facilities under construction, 600 MW more in the pipeline and a subsidiary having the largest market cap in fuel & power sector, we are well posed to retain commendable presence in the power sector. Most of our power assets are now debt-free and UPGDCL, the 1st commercial independent power plant of the Bangladesh has been listed. These steps will catapult United to the next level – to undertake bigger projects and create value for people of Bangladesh.

We have developed and structured an engineering, procurement and construction team which has the largest EPC Experience in Bangladesh. Our O&M team, United Engineering & Power Services Ltd. is committed to providing successful operation and maintenance services to all our power plants.

We set up the first true to sense tertiary level hospital with cardiac surgery facilities, radioactive oncology, nuclear medicine and cardiology equipment all under one roof in 2006. United Hospital, equipped with 500 beds and 11 state-of-the-art operation theatres, are staffed by the most esteemed doctors in their respective fields.

United International University is the 1st private university in Bangladesh which has disbursed USD 120,000 as research grant among its faculties for 31 different research project. Enrolling over 7000 students, UIU has recently made the move to its own campus at United City Satarkul sprawling across an area of 8 acres. 

United Securities Ltd., our venture into the capital market of Bangladesh to serve local & foreign investors, has made its place among the top 5 companies in terms of turnover within 6 months of its operation. We are committed to help strengthen the capital market, having already invested USD 142 million, with plans to invest more in the future.

United is focusing on improving the living standard in Bangladesh, particularly in Dhaka city, through investment in retail and real estate. Unimart Ltd., the largest hypermarket of the country, has set the precedence of the ultimate retail experience to its clients while Chef’s Table is the new food district in town introducing an incredible, versatile culinary experience and the most diversified cuisines under one roof for the first time in Bangladesh.

We have not limited our drive to improving standard of living through commercial ventures only. We want our employees to experience the same standards of living that we are endeavoring to develop. In this view, in addition to developing and constructing residential and commercial spaces, we are also developing an Executive Complex at United’s township project at United City to house our employees.

Our goal is to continue the path towards sustainable growth as we set our focus on Infrastructure, Real Estate and CSR. We will remain one of the foremost investors and developers in Bangladesh in the Infrastructure sector as the process of diversification continues, parallelly. We have set forth an investment target of USD 200 million over the next 3 years. We believe in greater good of mankind and as such have not forgotten the community around us. United Trust was formed in 2010 as the social welfare organ of the Group with a vision to serve socially disadvantageous population of our country. We believe United exists to serve United Trust and it is in this view United will be injecting the majority of its turnover to United Trust after meeting the above investment target.

We are also hopeful about our ongoing Real estate projects such as United City a township project located in Satarkul Dhaka and IPCO Developments (Bangladesh) Ltd. We are setting up a High-Tech IT Park approved by BEPZA within United City.

We have braved unchartered territories, without hesitating to shoulder the “all-risk” package. From establishing the first Independent Power Plant in Khulna to the first, and till date the only, private Land Port between Myanmar and Bangladesh at Teknaf, United has been a tale of many firsts over the past 4 decades.

United attracts meritorious employees as we offer a platform to perform to the best of abilities. Our diverse business portfolio, spanning from healthcare to education, power generation to port, terminal, shipping, from manufacturing to real-estate, ensures a synergy giving a wider exposure to multi-various industries to our employees.

Human capital are our most important assets and investing in them for their development remains to be one of our core business strengths. For the betterment of the employees we are providing Medical & Insurance Facilities, interest free loan and also building Executive Official Complex within United City. In future we have plan to provide transport facilities to the employees.

Bangladesh has been a nation truly blessed by mother nature. The natural resources and the terrains embedded in the folds of this small country is a gift. As business house operating on this very land, we have an obligation to take care of the environment around us. We have adopted environment friendly practices. Our power plants have ISO certification, we use multi-stage processes in our power plants to reduce the burden on precious fossil fuels, our industries have closed loop ventilation systems. Our project design teams prioritize efficiency in both construction and operations stages as it is only through efficiency can we ensure less consumption from the nature and reduced emissions to the nature.

Last but not the least remains the duty to our community. Through United Trust we intend to inject our blessings back to the society. United Trust is the social welfare organ of United and has been focusing on critical issues such as rural education, health and sanitation, poverty alleviation and community service. United shall keep patronizing United Trust as much as they required in their endeavor to contribute to the community.

We believe in growing together. United has evolved together with the nation and if the Almighty wishes, shall continue to match pace and support the growth of the nation as Bangladesh moves onto its next growth chapter.
